Day 22: Leaving Newfoundland ~ July 22nd, 2009

Today we left NFLD. Yesterday we spent half the day packing while Grandpa spent time with the kiddies. Then we just relaxed and hung out for our last night at my dads. This morning we were up around 7, the kids ate breakfast with grandpa, we got ready and them we were on the road before 9. I am excited about getting back home…but at the same time its always so sad saying goodbye to my dad. He is SO far away and I never know when I will see him again. He isn’t exactly the picture of health these days and I know its morbid to think this way but I always think to myself, “this could be the last time I see him”. I am 32 years old and still…I am SO not ready to live without my daddy. Ok, I know…I just had a great vacation with him so I should be thinking about all the fun, not the what ifs…but this is my blog and along with this being a place to update friends and family its also a place to put down thoughts and feelings.

Anyway, on to nicer thoughts…

The drive to the ferry went well…minimal fighting from the kiddies. It took us about 5 hours to get there and we were almost 3 hours early which anyone who knows me knows that this is awesome. We checked in, only to find out that the ferry to Nova Scotia was delayed 2 hours so we were actually 5 hours early…lol. I think this is kind of ironic (and annoying) that one of the very few times we are early for anything the ferry is delayed giving us an extra 2 hours. So, we hung out in the terminal, watched some movies, got the kids cleaned up and changed and then eventually we were able to board sometime around 6:30pm and it was 7:30 before it left so it actually ended up being 3 hours delayed, not 2. The ferry ride took a lot longer this time then it did when we crossed to come here. It took over 6 hours this time and only 4 on the way. By the time we docked the kids had JUST fallen asleep which sucked because then we had to wake them and try to get 4 sleepy, uncoordinated children down to the car while carting all the backpacks and blankets and the stroller. We still had 1.5 hours drive ahead of us to get to Jody’s and they slept the whole way there.

It was rainy and foggy and add to that being tired and unfamiliar roads and well lets just say it wasn’t the most pleasant ride…lol. We got to Jody’s just before 3 am (Sorry Jody…and Chris, Al, Jen, & Paula) Im sure they were all just overjoyed to have us wake them up at 3 am and then invade their sleeping space. I was so excited to get to sleep, and I died the second my head hit the pillow. Here are some pics of last night and today…

Day 15: Picnics And Humpbacks ~ July 15th, 2009

Today was a fantastic day. We went to a park about an hour from my dads to have a picnic with my dad, my brother, my cousin, my sister, her husband and kids.

The kids played on the beach, found starfish, crabs, sea urchins, and tons of other things. They played in the big waves, Lincoln and my brother picked two buckets full of muscles, and then we had a picnic supper on the beach. Just as we were leaving, about to drive away we spotted a Humpback whale right in the bay. I only got two pics of it, and it was kinda far away but I got a fairly decent video of it. Watch the whole video…its over 3 minutes and the beginning of it is kinda far away but once you get to around a minute and 15 seconds you can see the whale jump a few times and then I remembered to zoom…lol. There’s a couple spots where I got distracted and the camera moves around a bit but right after that you can see him rolling around waving his fins. It was SO cool. I can’t belive we were just about to drive away and almost missed it.

Here is the link to the video…

Day 13: Salmonid Interpretation Centre ~ July 13th, 2009

My dad took us to the Salmonid Interpretation Centre today. It is one of the largest Atlantic Salmon enhancement projects in North America. It highlights the history, biology, ecology and habitat of Atlantic Salmon. It was actually very cool to see. You can watch the Salmon swimming upstream. I took a video of them jumping upstream. About 30-45 seconds into the video you can see three or 4 of them jump. Here is the link…

And here are the pics…

Day 12: Riley Eating Capelin ~ July 12th, 2009

Riley tried Capelin today. For those of you who don’t know, Capelin are a small fish in the smelt family. In Newfoundland in July, they move inshore by the millions to spawn on the beaches. For a couple weeks in July you can literally just stand on the beach and scoop them up in nets or buckets. Newfoundlanders usually eat them dried. Anyway…today my dad gave one to Riley…she made a face at first and then went right on back to stuffing them in her mouth. You are supposed to remove the heads but Jamie decided to be funny and EAT the heads…GROSS! Jamie calls them “fish jerky” (I guess because they are dried they remind him of eating beef jerky).

Day 11 Of Our East Coast Trip ~ July 11th, 2009

WOOOO was it hot here today. It doesn’t get hot in Newfoundland for very long so almost no one has AC here. It was SO hot outside today…and inside also. We spent most of the day doing nothing, just relaxing and trying to bear the heat. We had lobster for supper…real Atlantic lobster, caught in Newfoundland. In the evening when it started to cool down we took the kids for ice cream at the “Big Scoop” and then took a walk down to the river. The kids are having a blast with Grandpa!

Day 10: First Day With Grandpa ~ July 10th, 2009

Last night I slept great. It was the first night since we left home that we werent sleeping cold and wet, shivering through the whole night. It was a real bed, not in a tent. YAY! Lochy and Kenzie woke up and went straight to find Grandpa and Uncle Steve and then Grandpa came in and got Riley before we woke up so Jamie and I got to sleep in until after 12:30. We went to Suzie’s(my sister) for supper and the kids got to play with their cousins, Makyla and Ryker. One of my aunts came over to see the kiddies also. By the time we got back to my dads Riley was asleep, Kenzie was begging to go to bed, and Lochy fell asleep almost right after that.

Day 9: Leaving Cape Breton-Headed To Newfoundland ~ July 9th, 2009

Today we left Cape Breton. Jamie’s parents left early, long before we did. I didnt even manage to get out of the tent to say goodbye to them because I was so upset about Riley. Her eye this morning was still swollen almost shut. I sat inside the tent with her, keeping her out of the sun as long as I could before we had to start packing up to leave. We headed out about 1pm and headed to the Newfoundland Ferry. When we got there I gave Riley some Benedryl (going on my assumption that the swelling was due to some allergic reaction to the bites) and within a couple hours her face was almost back to normal. YAY! The ferry left North Sydney at 3:30pm Nova Scotia time and docked in Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland at about 9pm. There was lots for the kids to do on the boat. We had a nice supper, the little ones played in the playroom, Lincoln went to the arcade, there were movies to watch, and shops to look around in. When we got to Newfoundland we still had a 5 hour drive ahead of us but the kids slept most of the way. We got to my dads around 2 am and stayed awake just long enough to say hello and then went to bed. My camera died just after we got off the boat so I didnt get any pics after that point, but here are the ones from the rest of the day.

Day 8: Bad Day ~ July 8th, 2009

Today was not such a great day. We woke up this morning and one side of Riley’s face was swollen…so badly that her eye on that side was swollen shut. Literally she couldnt even open her eye. Her face was unrecognizable. We took her to the hospital and it was a waste of time. I was there less than 5 minutes before they sent us home and they couldnt tell me anything. From what we can figure out it was a reaction to a bunch of mosquito bites she had around her eye a few days before. On top of that she got too much sun the day before and her face is peeling badly. It looks SO bad. I can barely look at her without breaking down. She doesnt seem to be bothered by any of it but it just looks so BAD. I didnt take many pics today since I spent most of the day trying to keep her occupied in the shade and I wasnt in much of a mood for taking pics. I refuse to take a picture of her like this. I don’t need the reminder. I did get a few pics of the other kids though.
